Chefchaouen Day Trip from Tangier

Leave Tangier in the morning, spend about five hours in the Blue City, and sleep in your own bed the same night. €135 in a Comfort SUV, €150 in a Spacious Van. That is the price of the whole car, not a per-person fare, so four of you travel for about €34 each.

Book on WhatsApp or by email. Pay the driver when you get back to Tangier.

The day

Out at eight, back by six

This is the schedule most people take, and it leaves you unhurried at both ends. The drive covers about 120 km each way on the N2 through the Rif Mountains. Every time below is a suggestion you can move, because the vehicle and driver are yours for the whole day.

What you get

Included in the fixed price

The fare covers the vehicle and the driver for the full day, not a seat on a shared bus. Everything you would normally be charged extra for on the road is already in the price. We list what is not included as well, so there are no awkward conversations at the end of the day.

  • Private vehicle and licensed driver for the full day
  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off in Tangier
  • Fuel, tolls and parking in Chefchaouen
  • Optional photo stop at the Rif mountain pass
  • About 5 hours of free time in Chefchaouen
  • Bottled water in the vehicle
  • Lunch and drinks (your driver can recommend spots)
  • A walking guide inside the medina

How it works

Three messages and the day is booked

  1. 1

    Tell us the date

Your hotel in Tangier, the date, and how many people are travelling — on WhatsApp or through the form on this page, at least three days before the trip. We reply with the fixed price and the vehicle, usually within a few hours.

  2. 2

    Agree the timing

Tell us your preferred departure time and how long you want in Chefchaouen. We confirm the pickup time and the meeting point for the return.

  3. 3

    Travel, then pay the driver

Your driver collects you in the morning and brings you back the same evening. You pay cash at the end of the day, in euros or dirhams.

Why go private

Your car, your clock

Group tours to Chefchaouen leave early, stop where the operator wants, and pull out of the medina before the afternoon light gets good. A private day trip costs more per person for a solo traveller and less for a family, and it gives you the whole day on your own terms.

  • One vehicle for your group only. No other passengers, no pickup circuit around town.
  • Your driver waits in Chefchaouen all day, so you are never rushed by a coach schedule.
  • Door-to-door from your hotel or riad, not a meeting point at 06:30 across the city.
  • Cheaper than two one-way transfers, which would come to €198 for the same car.
  • Departure and return times are yours to set, including early starts for cruise passengers.
  • Fixed price per vehicle agreed on WhatsApp before you travel. No haggling on the day.

Cruise passengers

Back at the ship before it sails

Ships calling at Tangier usually dock early and leave in the evening, which is enough time for Chefchaouen if the day is planned around your sailing time rather than a standard schedule. Send us your ship name, docking time and all-aboard time, and we work the day backwards from there with a safety margin built in. Pickup is at the port gate, and your driver keeps your phone number for the whole day.

Chefchaouen is a long round trip, so we will tell you straight away if your port call is too short to do it comfortably. In that case a Tangier city tour or Asilah is the better use of your day, and we would rather say so than sell you a rushed drive. Nothing is charged upfront either way.

  • Pickup at the Tangier port gate, not a city meeting point
  • Timing planned backwards from your all-aboard time
  • Driver holds your WhatsApp number for the whole day
  • Honest answer if your port call is too short for the round trip

Not returning the same day?

Staying the night in Chefchaouen

If you are checking into a riad in Chefchaouen rather than coming back to Tangier, you do not need the day rate. A one-way private transfer is cheaper, and you can book the return leg separately once you know how long you want to stay. Many visitors do one night in the Blue City and add the Akchour waterfalls the next morning.

Questions

Frequently asked

Don't see it? Just ask on WhatsApp.

How long does it take to get from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
The drive is around 120 km and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours each way on the N2 highway. The road is paved and well maintained for the entire route, though it climbs through the Rif Mountains with some bends in the second half. Traffic leaving Tangier in the morning and the occasional slow truck on the mountain section are the usual variables. Your driver knows the road and plans the departure so you arrive in Chefchaouen mid-morning.
How much does a Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier cost?
A Comfort SUV for up to 4 passengers is €135 for the whole round trip. A Spacious Van for up to 7 passengers is €150. The price is per vehicle and not per person, so a family or a group of friends splits one fare between them. It covers the drive out, the driver waiting in Chefchaouen for the day, and the drive back to Tangier, including fuel, tolls and parking.
Is Chefchaouen worth a day trip from Tangier?
Yes, for most visitors it is the single best day trip from Tangier. The blue-washed medina is compact enough to see properly in an afternoon, and the highlights sit close together: the main square at Place Outa el Hammam, the Kasbah, the Ras El Maa waterfall at the top of the old town, and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint above the valley. Five hours is comfortable for a first visit at a relaxed pace. If you want to photograph the medina at sunrise or in the late evening light, an overnight stay suits you better.
How many hours do I get in Chefchaouen?
About 5 hours on the standard schedule, which is a 08:00 departure from Tangier and a return around 18:00. That is enough to walk the medina, climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, sit for lunch on a terrace, and still browse the souks without watching the clock. If you want longer, tell us when you book and we can start earlier or return later. The driver stays in Chefchaouen the whole time, so the schedule is genuinely flexible.
Is this a private trip or a shared group tour?
It is fully private. The vehicle carries only your group, and there are no other stops to collect strangers on the way out of Tangier. You decide the departure time, whether to take the mountain photo stop, and how long you spend in the city. Group coach tours are cheaper per head for solo travellers, but they run on a fixed timetable and usually give you less time in the medina.
Can you do this as a shore excursion from the Tangier cruise port?
Yes, and we do it regularly. Tell us your ship name and the sailing time when you book, and we build the day backwards from that so you are back at the port with a safe margin. Pickup is at the port gate rather than a hotel. Chefchaouen is a long round trip, so we need a reasonably early docking time to make it work comfortably, and we will tell you honestly on WhatsApp if your call is too short for it.
Do I need a guide in Chefchaouen?
No. The medina is small, safe and easy to navigate on foot, and most visitors explore it independently with a phone map. Your driver is not a licensed walking guide, but they will point you toward the main sights, suggest where to eat, and agree a clear meeting point for the return. Local guides can be hired at the medina entrance on the day if you decide you want one.
Is it better to do a day trip or stay overnight in Chefchaouen?
A day trip works well if Tangier is your base and you want to see the Blue City without moving hotels. You get the medina in good daylight and you sleep in your own bed that night. An overnight stay is better if you want the medina empty at dawn, the blue walls in evening light, or a hike toward Akchour the following day. If you decide to stay, book our one-way transfer instead and arrange the return when your plans are set.
What should I bring and wear?
Comfortable walking shoes matter most, because the medina is built on a slope and the lanes are cobbled and uneven. Bring a light layer for the morning drive through the mountains, which stays cool even in summer. Sunscreen, a hat and cash for lunch and the souks are worth having, since many small shops do not take cards. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated in the older parts of town.
Can we change the departure time or add stops?
Yes. The 08:00 start is a suggestion, not a fixed schedule. Earlier departures give you more time in Chefchaouen and a quieter medina, and later starts are fine if you prefer a slow morning. Message us on WhatsApp with what you have in mind and we will confirm it with the driver before the day.
Is this the same as hiring a private driver for the day?
Yes, that is a fair description of it. The car and driver are yours for the whole day: you are picked up at your hotel in Tangier, the driver takes you to Chefchaouen, waits around 5 hours while you explore the blue medina at your own pace, and drives you back the same evening. €135 for a Comfort SUV covers the vehicle, not each seat. What it does not include is an open-ended itinerary: the day runs Tangier to Chefchaouen and back, not wherever you decide along the way. If you want several days with a car and driver across the north, message us on WhatsApp with your dates.
