Tangier to Fes

By motorway it is around 460 km and roughly 5 hours of driving, with a break. By the inland road through the Rif it is closer to 330 km, but the going is slower, so plan on 5 to 6 hours. If you add the stop in Chefchaouen, the whole thing becomes a full day: leave Tangier in the morning, spend the middle of the day in the blue city, and reach Fes in the evening.

In the Comfort SUV, which carries four with luggage: €225 by motorway, €235 by the Rif road, or €255 with 2 to 3 hours in Chefchaouen on the way. The Spacious Van carries seven and is €20 more on each of the three, so €245, €255 and €275. Every fare is for the whole vehicle rather than per person, and all of them include fuel and motorway tolls. The difference between the roads is the driver's day, not a booking fee: the mountain road is slower and the stop means waiting, so he is paid more for each.

Your choice. The motorway runs down the Atlantic coast past Larache and Rabat, then turns inland to Meknes and Fes. It is the fast, easy option and most of it is dual carriageway, which is why it is the cheapest of the three at €225 in the SUV and €245 in the van. The inland road is shorter in kilometres but goes through the Rif Mountains and farming country, so it takes longer and asks more of the car and the driver. That one is €235 and €255. Chefchaouen sits on the Rif road, so any version with the stop takes it.

Yes, and it is the version most people book. For €255 in the SUV, or €275 in the van, the driver breaks the journey in Chefchaouen and waits 2 to 3 hours while you walk the blue medina, take photos and have lunch. That is €30 more than the plain motorway run for half a day in one of the most photographed towns in Morocco, and you are not doubling back for it, since Chefchaouen is on the inland route between the two cities. Tell us when you book so the driver plans an early enough start.

Much cheaper, yes. ONCF runs several trains a day and a second-class seat costs somewhere around 200 MAD per person, so for one or two people travelling light the train is the sensible choice. Check current times and fares on the ONCF site before you decide. The private car wins when there are three or more of you, when you have real luggage, when you want to be collected at your hotel rather than the station, or when you want to see Chefchaouen on the way, which no train can do.

Take the van if there are more than four of you, or if you are carrying big cases and want the extra room on a long drive.

At your riad or hotel, or as close as a vehicle can get. Fes el Bali is a pedestrian medina, so for addresses inside it the driver stops at the nearest gate, helps you out with the bags and points you down the right lane. Send the riad name when you book and we will confirm the drop-off point in advance.

If you have the days for it, yes. Chefchaouen deserves more than an afternoon, and a night there breaks up what is otherwise a long day in the car. In that case you book two separate transfers instead of one: Tangier to Chefchaouen at €125 for the van, then Chefchaouen to Fes at €170 whenever you are ready to move on. In the van that is only about €20 more than the one-day price, so the night in the mountains costs you almost nothing on the fare. Decide it on the trip you want rather than the money.

We do, but northbound out of Fes depends on the date. The drivers we work with live in the north, so a Fes pickup only works when a car is already down there, usually the morning after a southbound run. When one is, it goes at the same fixed prices in reverse, from €225 for the SUV by motorway up to €275 for the van with the Chefchaouen stop, and we can drop you at Tangier Med for a ferry or at the airport for a flight.
